Designing a series of outdoor rooms with a sense of place was a priority for our clients, a young couple with 3 children.  The landscape design was envisioned as a modern take on a classic Mediterranean themed garden with echoes of mid-century mixed in. Sculptural olive trees interspersed with boxwood globes and cactus add a bit of whimsy throughout the property. The foyer entry space transitions to a dramatic cactus garden integrating blue cactus, Mexican fence post cactus and punctuated by a large variegated African candelabra succulent. Anchored by a central courtyard space, views and connections to the landscape occur throughout the residence.  Custom metal gates, benches, travertine paving and layered clipped hedges reinforce the gardens architecture from front to back. A second-floor terrace incorporates a potted garden of dwarf citrus, cactus, and leafy perennials. The backyard terminus showcases an outdoor living room with a fireplace framed by olive trees and lawn terrace with stone benches.
